What Are Chemical Peels?
A chemical peel is an exfoliating process that removes the top layer of the dermis. Your face will be cleansed. A numbing agent may be applied, or a general anesthetic if you are in need of a deeper peel. As a general rule, a chemical peel will be light or medium. A deep peel is generally only done under the direction of a certified aesthetician.

A mild peel will be applied with a brush or a cotton ball. A medium chemical peel will stay on longer and may be applied with a brush or foam applicator. A deeper or medium peel will take longer and maybe start with a topical anesthetic. Once the peel time is met, the product will be gently rinsed away and your skin treated with a soothing tonic. A deep peel may include a topical anesthetic. 

How to Choose the Right One for Your Skin and Expectations
The more dermis you have removed, the more recovery time you will need. If you are just concerned about wrinkles, tired skin, or dullness, a mild peel may be all you need. A medium chemical peel can be helpful if you have dry skin and are seeing sagging. A deep peel may help treat more serious skin issues. 

What Should I Expect?
A mild peel should not be uncomfortable. Many people find they can apply a soothing topical and go back to work or to their regular tasks. It is critical that you avoid sunlight after a chemical peel. It's a good idea to plan a day or two at home after a deeper peel; you will need to rest and you may need a second dose of soothing topical to reduce inflammation. Finally, if you are recommended for a deep chemical peel, prepare your home with plenty of clean water, some fresh fruits and veggies for antioxidants, and a button-up shirt to avoid tugging anything over your face.
